Pedestrian dies after being hit by car, but Chilliwack RCMP say no crime occurred; motorist has allegedly not filed an ICBC claim

“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 9:56 a.m. this morning about a motor vehicle incident in the 46100-block of Princess Avenue in Chilliwack,” BC EHS said in a statement. “Two ambulances, an advanced care paramedic unit, and a supervisor responded. Paramedics cared for and transported one patient to hospital in critical condition.”

The Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment posted on X/Twitter at 12:04 p.m. that day that police had closed the intersection of Princess and Nowell due to a police investigation. Cpl. Carmen Kiener said the Chilliwack Traffic Unit, in consultation with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS), investigated the incident. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with police. Impairment was not a factor, Cpl. Kiener said in November.

Fraser Valley Today received an email earlier this week from the son of the male pedestrian who died, advising that the man received serious head trauma after being hit by a vehicle and later died of his injuries.

“The police have not responded to our inquiries, nor when I last spoke with ICBC had the driver filed a claim,” the unidentified man said of his father’s injuries.

In response to this man’s email about his dad’s death, Fraser Valley Today reached out to Cpl. Kiener for an update on the incident.

“I just reviewed the file and can confirm that the pedestrian later died from his injuries,” Cpl. Kiener said via email on Wednesday, January 17. “A thorough investigation determined that there were no signs of criminality and it was a tragic accident.”
