CHILLIWACK — There is no change in the status of the bitter cold temperatures in the Fraser Valley this weekend.

Environment Canada’s Artic Outflow Warning remains in place in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Hope Friday and is expected to remain in place through much of the weekend.

In its latest update, it suggests the windchill values which have been approaching minus 30, may begin to moderate Saturday afternoon. The wind chill may moderate to values ranging from minus 10 to minus 20.

Don’t let the bright sunshine fool you. Environment Canada warns frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes to exposed skin and calls for people to dress warmly in layers and to stay dry.

Extreme cold warnings are in place for anyone travelling the Coquihalla Highway and the Okanagan Connector. Wind chill values along those high-elevation highways are expected to approach minus 50 as winds gust up to 40 km/h.

Those who are travelling those roads are advised to pack extra blankets among their emergency supplies in case they are forced to stop mid-trip because of a road closure or a vehicle breakdown.

While there is no snow in the forecast through the weekend, Environment Canada is expecting snow to return to the Fraser Valley mid-week, as temperatures return to near-normal values.
