Altercations lead to lockdown at Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford and Kent Institution inmates hospitalized
ABBOTSFORD — Altercations among inmates at the Matsqui Institution and at the Kent Institute on Thursday (Jan. 4) resulted in several inmates being assaulted.
In a Correctional Service news release, authorities say the injured were assessed by staff members of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and transported to an external hospital for necessary treatment following the “significant altercation”. A number of Correctional Service personnel were seen at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital Thursday evening. No CSC staff were injured during the incident.
Meantime CSC said a number of inmates at the Kent Institution were also assaulted Thursday and sent to hospital. However, it is not saying if the two altercations are connected.
Fraser Health Authority (FHA) said Abbotsford Regional Hospital restricted access Thursday for approximately four hours when CSC staff were at the hospital. FHA said patient care was not affected.
