Independent Investigations Office probes fatal incident in Langley

LANGLEY — An incident in Langley has left one man dead and sparked an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO).

According to news release from IIO, the incident unfolded during a wellness check Friday (Nov. 10). At approximately 10:15 a.m., the police responded to a call regarding a man with an unknown whereabouts. The search led them to a building on 0 Avenue in Langley, where the man was discovered.

According to investigators, that’s when police learned the individual who was armed. He then took steps to barricade himself inside the building. Police remained on the scene throughout the day and into the evening.

A fire erupted during the course of the incident, resulting in the destruction of the building. It is believed that the man succumbed to the flames since he was not seen leaving the structure.

Two police vehicles used for containment were heavily damaged by the fire. No one else was injured.

The IIO was promptly notified of the situation and has initiated an investigation to uncover the details surrounding the incident. The focus will include determining the role of police actions or inactions during the course of events.
