Road safety a priority as school returns to Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley

Sep 4, 2023 | 6:00 AM

CHILLIWACK — With the arrival of the new school year this week, the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP is reminding students, parents, and motorists of their collective responsibility in ensuring the safe return of children to school.

In Chilliwack and other Fraser Valley communities, school zone speed limits will be strictly enforced on school days from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. where posted. However, it’s important to note that in some Upper Fraser Valley Regional District (UFVRD) areas, school zones don’t come into effect until 8:00 a.m. Motorists are urged to be vigilant and aware of the specific school zone times in their communities to avoid potential violations.

With the anticipated increase in traffic, buses, and students during rush-hour commutes, the RCMP is urging drivers to exercise caution and maintain heightened awareness for children on the roadways. Speeding through school zones and disregarding school buses’ stop signs are not only dangerous but also illegal driving behaviors.

“The RCMP, in collaboration with our partners from SpeedWatch, Safe Roads, and ICBC, will be stationed at various locations across the community to ensure drivers are adhering to speed limits and, most importantly, that our students are safe,” said Sergeant Krista Vrolyk, RCMP spokesperson.

As the school year begins, drivers, parents, and students alike are encouraged to review essential safety tips:

For Drivers:

  1. Comply with speed limits and exercise extra caution in school zones.
  2. Avoid parking within or obstructing designated crosswalks.
  3. Never pass a stopped vehicle allowing pedestrians to cross.
  4. When encountering a school bus with flashing lights and an extended stop sign, both lanes of traffic must come to a complete stop until the bus driver turns off the lights and retracts the stop sign.

For Parents and Caregivers:

  1. Initiate conversations with your children about road safety.
  2. Whenever possible, avoid dropping off children on the opposite side of the street from their school. If unavoidable, ensure your child knows how to safely cross at the nearest designated crosswalk.
  3. Refrain from double-parking and only stop or unload in designated parking or drop-off zones.

For Students:

  1. Review your route to school with a responsible adult at home.
  2. Whenever crossing the street, use marked crosswalks.
  3. Always look both ways before crossing: stop, look, and listen.
  4. Make eye contact with drivers who stop to let you cross.
  5. Remove earbuds and headphones to stay aware of your surroundings.
  6. Limit phone and digital device use while walking and crossing streets, focusing on safety instead.
  7. When cycling, follow road rules, stay on the right side of the road, wear a properly fitted helmet, and travel single file.

RCMP says a safe year of school will take a collective commitment to safety from all stakeholders, students, parents and drivers.
