LYTTON — The Nohomin Creek wildfire just northwest of the village of Lytton has grown to an estimated 1,500 hectares in size.

According to the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS), the fire size has been updated to 1,500 hectares as a result of wind-driven growth on the west flank, in steep terrain.

Fire personnel are dealing with heavy smoke, accessibility challenges, and rugged terrain.

Winds are gusting at approximately 30-40 kilometres an hour and pushing the fire west away from communities. The incident is still classified as “Out of Control” by BCWS.

The total number of fire personnel exceeds 80 people. Fourteen personnel were scheduled to work overnight focusing on structure protection and patrolling the north flank. Sprinkler systems had been set up and would be activated as needed.

There are no road closures along Highway 1 or 12 in either direction. Lytton First Nation has issued evacuation orders for several First Nations reserves.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire origin and cause specialists have been deployed to assist.
