Chilliwack-Kent MLA Paddon cherishes time serving with Premier Horgan

CHILLIWACK — Kelli Paddon has spent less than two years in an official capacity under his tutelage, but the unexpected announcement by B.C. Premier John Horgan last week that he would step down, did little to quench Kelli Paddon’s genuine appreciation for the longtime NDP leader.

If anything, it gave her a profound sense of pride in Horgan as he battled through throat cancer and underwent 35 rounds of cancer treatments before revealing on June 28 that he would step down as premier.

“I’m happy for the Premier,” Paddon said. “He has worked hard and led us through incredible challenges, all while facing his own health issues.”

Paddon was elected in October 2020 with 36.4 per cent of the vote, defeating incumbent Laurie Throness (30.6 per cent) and Chilliwack city councillor Jason Lum (23.5 per cent).

Since her election to office, she saw firsthand what she described as Horgan’s personable coaching style on display. He took time to help mentor Paddon in her relatively brief time in the B.C. Legislature.

“The Premier has been an amazing coach, building a strong, diverse and united team, and leading us in the work of building a stronger B.C. that includes everyone,” Paddon said. “I am personally grateful for the time he has taken to support me in my role as I serve the community I love.”

Once Horgan steps down as premier and transitions back to life as an MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca, Paddon says she’ll still maintain that connection with him.

“I look forward to continuing to build on this legacy, and to working with him as an MLA once a new leader is chosen,” Paddon said. “I think the Premier continues to show the same great leadership and focus on serving British Columbians as he always has in the timing of this announcement. It allows for a smooth transition of leadership as we continue the work we are all dedicated to.”

In the meantime, Paddon says she will wait for all leadership candidates to come forward before she offers her support.
