HOPE — Officials say residents remain safe despite an out-of-control wildfire growing 15 times its size since Thursday afternoon.

BC Wildfire Service continues to work with ground crews, helicopters and heavy equipment to tackle the 40-hectare Ferrabee Wildfire, located roughly 2.5 kilometres southeast of Hell’s Gate.

Fire behaviour is ranked at 2, as a low-vigour surface fire with an open flame.

“This fire is burning in steep terrain with some areas being inaccessible to ground crews,” said BC Wildfire in an update Friday. “There is no immediate threat to structures or to public safety.”

The District of Hope says smoke may be visible in the area today and tomorrow due to north and northeast winds blowing in from the wildfire.

BC Wildfire adds that the fire is highly visible along the Trans-Canada Highway and in nearby communities.

Highway traffic in this area may be disrupted by firefighting crews and equipment.

A wildfire advisory is in effect for a 17.2-kilometre stretch between Junction Hwy 12 and Nicomen River Road.

More information on traffic delays, if needed, is available on the DriveBC website.

The fire is suspected to be human-caused.
