CHILLIWACK — Twenty-two teams across B.C. have now joined to form one new Junior A hockey league to fill the void that the BCHL left three years ago.

On March 28, BC Hockey unanimously approved the British Columbia Hockey Conference as its newest member.

The BCHC consists of 14 KIJHL teams, as well as eight from the PJHL, including the Chilliwack Jets, Langley Trappers and Ridge Meadows Flames.

They will each be split into the Interior, Kootenay and Mainland Divisions when play begins for the Mowat Cup this fall.

“We are now positioned to return to competition for Hockey Canada’s national Junior A championship and, more importantly, to deliver a high-quality player experience for players and families,” BC Hockey Chief Executive Officer Cameron Hope said.

The BCHC is looking to finalize a membership application to the Canadian Junior Hockey League over the coming days, in hopes of allowing B.C. teams to participate in the Centennial Cup.

“For the past three seasons, these clubs have worked incredibly hard to enhance their operations and elevate the development resources available to their athletes,” said BCHC commissioner Jeff Dubois.

“Thousands of individuals in these communities have supported us through this process, and it’s tremendous to be able to reward them for those efforts.”

The BCHL parted ways with Hockey Canada in June 2023, citing that the move was done to help provide a higher level of hockey for both fans and players.
