ABBOTSFORD — In an extraordinary case that required judicial intervention, the Abbotsford Police Department has been granted a court order that allows them to publish the name of a male teenager who is wanted on three counts of robbery and aggravated assault.

In a news release Wednesday evening (Jan. 11) from Sgt. Paul Walker, the Abbotsford Police Department announced that 16-year-old Diego Guevara has evaded authorities and has had a warrant out for his arrest following his involvement in a violent incident in August 2022.

On August 11, at 2:38 a.m., patrol officers from the Abbotsford Police Department who were conducting routine patrols located a 37-year-old female in medical distress in the intersection of Gladwin Road and South Fraser Way.

Officers determined that the female was suffering from being stabbed. Emergency medical care was provided, resulting in the female being transported to hospital with serious injuries. As a result, the investigation had been transitioned to the AbbyPD Major Crime Unit (MCU), supported by the Forensic Identification Section (FIS).

On September 28, members of the AbbyPD Major Crime Unit, with the Surrey RCMP’s assistance, arrested Guevara in relation to this incident. The B.C. Prosecution Service approved charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and robbery.

On October 19, Guevara was released from custody pending his next court appearance, though the reasons for his release are not known. He has since failed to appear, and a warrant for his arrest was issued on November 9. All attempts to locate Guevara have been unsuccessful to date, Sgt. Walker indicated in a statement.

On Wednesday, January 11, the Abbotsford Police Department was granted a court order to seek public assistance in locating Guevara, who is a youth and is currently wanted on three counts of robbery and aggravated assault.

“Today we’re appealing to the public for assistance in locating a youth who is wanted on a number of charges. Earlier today we were granted a court order from the Abbotsford Court House that allows the Abbotsford Police Department to be permitted, pursuant to section 110 (4) of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, to publish information that identifies Diego Guevara as a young person having committed or having allegedly committed an indictable offence. This court order is valid until the end of the day on January 16,” Sgt. Walker said.

Anyone with information on Guevara’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department Major Crime information line at 604-864-4850.
