ABBOTSFORD — British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has opened a file into a crash that claimed two lives Sunday (Aug. 8) in Abbotsford.

In a news release, the IIO says it was notified of the crash shortly after it occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

According to information provided by the Abbotsford Police Department, officers were attempting to stop a white Acura that was believed to be associated with a recent violent crime.

After intially spotting and then losing sight of the car at 3 p.m., the Acura was spotted again about an hour later and a police pursuit began.

Officers attempted to use their vehicles to stop the suspect vehicle in the 31900-block of McClure Road near Clearbrook Road. But the suspect’s vehicle left the road and collided with a tree.

The female passenger in the car was declared dead at the scene while the male driver was taken to hospital where he died later.

The IIO is asking anyone that may have information relevant to the investigation to come forward by contacting its office at 1 855 446-8477 or via the contact form on its website: iiobc.ca. It is also hoping those with dashcam or survillance video will provide the video to investigators.

The IIO is B.C.’s independent civilian agency that investigates police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
