Ridge Meadows RCMP launch safety initiative after recent pedestrian collisions

MAPLE RIDGE — Ridge Meadows RCMP have launched a new initiative to boost traffic safety as the days get colder—and darker.

On October 12, officers with the RCMP’s Road Safety Target Team (RSTT) ramped up enforcement in high pedestrian collision sites. Within a few hours, police handed out 28 violation tickets along Lougheed Highway between 207th and 222nd Street.

Eight tickets were issued to pedestrians for failing to use a crosswalk, including one person who jaywalked in front of a police car and another who was issued two tickets for separate violations.

“Drivers and pedestrians both have a shared responsibility for road safety,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP S/Sgt Chris Kelly. “The consequences of not following safe practices can unfortunately often be tragic.”

There have been three fatal pedestrian crashes so far in 2025. The most recent one occurred on October 1 at 210th Street and the Lougheed. A second serious incident also occurred on September 22 at 216th Street and Lougheed Highway.

Roughly 15 per cent of that roadway’s traffic collisions have involved pedestrians.

“Simply put – Don’t be a statistic. Slow down, pay close attention, and remember to only use marked crossings, especially at busy intersections. You might save a life, even your own.”

Police are urging pedestrians to wear visible clothes, make eye contact with drivers and only use marked crossings. Drivers are asked to slow down and scan for pedestrians.

RSTT and frontline officers are set to focus on safety enforcement and education throughout the fall and winter season.
