Chilliwack RCMP report surge of familiar scam targeting seniors

CHILLIWACK — Scumbags keep targeting unsuspecting seniors who would do anything for their kids or grandkids.

Chilliwack RCMP say they are seeing “another influx” of scam phone calls targeting seniors in which nefarious fraudsters often pretend to be a grandchild or other family member in distress, claiming they need bail money or emergency funds.

As they’ve warned the public in the past on repeated occasions, Mounties say police and the courts will never ask for bail money over the phone.

Other things Chilliwack RCMP want people to consider:

• Scammers may send someone to your door to collect cash. Please do not give money to strangers.
• Never share personal details or your address over the phone.

If you have parents or loved ones who aren’t on social media, please speak with them directly. Your conversation could prevent them from becoming a victim.

“These cases are actively being investigated, but identifying suspects in phone and online frauds takes time. We need your help to spread the word,” Chililiwack RCMP said in a social media post. “Talk to the seniors in your life. Warn them about these scams. Report suspicious calls to the police. Together, we can protect our community.”
