SURREY — Health authorities are urging residents to stay alert against illegal food businesses across the Fraser Valley.

In a news release, Fraser Health authorities say they’ve received complaints related to illegal food service operations in the region, ranging from unapproved commercial kitchens and private homes to services like catering, takeout or baked products.

Approved establishments hold valid operating permits after a comprehensive review and on-site inspection, and permits must be clearly posted and visible to customers.

“Consuming food from an illegal food business increases your risk of food safety concerns and foodborne illnesses from improper food preparation, storage and handling of foods,” said Fraser Health officials in a news release.

“Foodborne illnesses such as E. coli and hepatitis may have greater impacts on vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, pregnant individuals and individuals with weakened immune systems.”

While not illegal, a list of some nearby Fraser Health orders shows a failure to get approval to operate a food premises at Canco Gas Station on Yale Road, as well as a short closure at Donair Time from September 20 to October 7 for reasons such as food not being cooked or reheated safely and high-contact surfaces not being properly washed and sanitized.

A full list of restaurant inspection reports is available online through the health agency. For details and help obtaining a health operating permit in the region, operators can contact 604-587-3936 to speak with an Environmental Health Officer.
