CHILLIWACK — A Chilliwack thrift store will celebrate a decade in operation this week as it strives to provide meaningful work experience and reintegration support for individuals impacted by incarceration.

Hidden Treasures Thrift Store, a social enterprise operated by the M2W2 Association, is marking a decade of service to the Chilliwack community this Sunday, Oct. 19.

Since opening in 2015, the store at 45923 Airport Road has emerged as a beacon of hope, sustainability, and transformation for people who want to transition to a new life. Hidden Treasures is one of several initiatives supported by M2W2’s Mentor Programs, which began in local correctional institutions 59 years ago. These programs connect participants with trained volunteers and staff who walk alongside them through the challenges of re-entering society. By instilling in them mentorship, job training, and community support, M2W2 empowers individuals to build confidence, develop employment skills, and reduce the risk of reoffending—contributing to safer and more resilient communities.

Steve Roukema, executive director of M2W2, said, “Hidden Treasures is more than a thrift store—it’s a launchpad for transformation.

“Through our Mentor Programs, which have been serving local institutions for nearly six decades, we’ve seen lives changed, families reunited, and public safety strengthened. We’re proud to celebrate ten years of impact and excited for what’s ahead,” Roukema said.

In addition to its social enterprise mission, Hidden Treasures is known for offering good value on gently used items, making quality clothing, household goods, and furniture affordable for everyone. The store’s commitment to sustainability and accessibility has made it a favourite among bargain hunters and community-minded shoppers alike. The store hired a new full-time manager, Tim Peters, who began in early September. This leadership transition reflects the store’s continued growth and its evolving role in supporting second chances.

Wiebo Maarhius, a dedicated volunteer who has been with Hidden Treasures since its grand opening in 2015, said, “I love the people that volunteer here and make it a special place. The cause to support those on parole allows opportunity for rehabilitation in a safe and encouraging place.”
