CHILLIWACK — Core cities in the Fraser Valley still managed to dent their monthly unemployment rates in June as significant job losses propped up across B.C.

Statistics Canada’s latest Labour Force Survey reported that Chilliwack lost 1,000 jobs, but the unemployment rate still decreased from 6.1 to 5.6 percent between June and July this year.

Abbotsford-Mission similarly lost about 800 jobs while reducing unemployment from 6.5 to 6.4 per cent in the past month.

The province lost approximately 16,000 jobs, predominantly among core-aged women and in more seasonal industries.

Construction (-7.6K) and educational services (-4.2K) experienced the largest losses between the two summer months, although both sectors are also up from July 2024.

A summer of looming tariff threats

Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Ravi Kahlon stressed the impact of tariff threats from the U.S.

“B.C. will continue the work to defend workers and businesses against these threats, build a strong economy that’s less reliant on the U.S. and create jobs for people in British Columbia,” Kahlon said in a statement.

“We have everything we need to thrive here in B.C.: a strong, diversified economy, some of Canada’s fastest-growing wages, abundant natural resources, clean energy, and skilled and hard-working people.”

Agriculture dropped by 33.6 per cent annually in July, while natural resources dipped by 17.4 per cent.

Aside from the trades, census data from 2021 show that Chilliwack’s primary economic drivers are service, health, and agriculture, while Abbotsford residents primarily work in health, education, and construction.
