HARRISON LAKE — The Bear Creek wildfire has now grown from a smouldering ground fire on Saturday (Aug. 2) to an upslope, 200-hectare blaze Sunday (Aug. 3) – more than ten times its size from the time of discovery.

Strong afternoon winds and terrain were the primary drivers of the sudden growth, according to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

Two heavy helicopters, three bucketing helicopters and two unit crews, comprising 61 people, have been tasked with controlling the fire today.

Drivers are asked to be mindful of the road closures in place at the 9-km and 20-km marks of Harrison East FSR due to increased hazards from the wildfire activity, including rockfall.

“The fire has created slope instability above the Harrison E FSR – dangers, trees and falling rocks continue to present hazards along the road below,” wrote the BCWS.

Road closures will remain in place through the long weekend and until further notice. Boaters and campers are also urged to stay well away from active wildfire operations for the safety of all involved.

An evacuation alert remains in effect for the North Cascade Bay Area in relation to this incident, meaning those in the area should be prepared to leave on short notice.
