Update: 165,000 chickens killed in massive barn fire in Abbotsford (VIDEO)

UPDATE: A statement released by the City of Abbotsford Friday midday indicates that approximately 165,000 chickens died due to the fire that destroyed three poultry barns. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

ABBOTSFORD – A spokesperson for the Abbotsford Police Department says firefighters were called to a major fire at a farm property in rural Abbotsford Thursday afternoon.

AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker tells Fraser Valley Today that three barns were fully destroyed on Gladwin Road, located southeast of Abbotsford International Airport. Sgt. Walker attended the scene and provided pictures to Fraser Valley Today confirming the barn fires.

The Gladwin Road farm is about 1 km north of the U.S.-Canada border.

The farm property houses a poultry operation, but the barns were not occupied by people during the fire, Sgt. Walker said, adding that there were birds inside the barns during the fire, however.

Sgt. Walker confirmed there were no civilian injuries.

CBC Vancouver is reporting that there were thousands of birds inside the barns.

Gladwin Road is currently closed southbound at Huntingdon Road, Sgt. Walker said.
