CHILLIWACK — BC Hydro says a motor vehicle accident in Chilliwack Saturday night has led to a power outage affecting nearly 2,000 customers.

According to its outage map dashboard, a motor vehicle accident is responsible for 1,924 customers losing power east of downtown Chilliwack Saturday night.

Power is expected back on by 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

Hydro crews are on scene.

According to scanner traffic, Chilliwack firefighters were dispatched at about 7:50 p.m. after getting a report of a rolled over vehicle near First Avenue and Windsor Street. The driver had been spoken to by RCMP members. Hydro had been dispatched for a sheared primary pole. Several online sources suggest the driver tried to flee the scene, but this has not been confirmed by police.

The vehicle in question, a Ford, reportedly rolled over and struck a hydro pole, before landing upside down in a bush.

Chilliwack firefighters remained on scene for well over an hour after the crash.

Fraser Valley Today has reached out to the Chilliwack RCMP detachment for comment on the incident.
