CHILLIWACK — Residents of Popkum east of Chilliwack could see simulated smoke and hear sirens during a training exercise scheduled for Tuesday evening.

According to a social media post, Popkum Fire Department plans to hold several mini-training exercises Tuesday evening, April 1 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Firefighters will be practicing their hazardous materials response skills through training scenarios.

Residents in Popkum, and possibly Rosedale or nearby Cheam First Nation, can expect to see fire trucks and emergency personnel in the area, as well as simulated smoke used to enhance the training experience. Popkum Fire wants to assure residents that the training is only a drill, and there is no cause for concern.

“We encourage members of the community to observe the training from a safe distance,” Popkum Fire said. “Thank you for your cooperation and ongoing support!”
