CHILLIWACK — With the support of over two-thirds of local Conservative Party of Canada members in Chilliwack-Hope who voted for the eventual winner, Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl is congratulating his friend, Pierre Poilievre, tonight on his election Saturday (Sept. 10) as the new CPC leader.

Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl endorsed and championed Poilievre from the get-go as a principled leader who will make the case for conservatism.

“Congratulations to my friend, Pierre Poilievre, for decisively winning the Conservative Party of Canada leadership race,” Strahl said. “I endorsed Pierre because I believe that Conservatives need a principled leader who will fight for our values and make the case for conservatism in Canada. “We need a champion who will stand up for our rights and freedoms and won’t back down from Justin Trudeau.”

Strahl, who was first elected to Parliament in 2011, praised Poilievre as the best candidate to take on the federal Liberals in the next election, slated for 2025.

“Pierre Poilievre is the leader we need for such a time as this and I am looking forward to working to help him become Canada’s next Prime Minister,” Strahl said.

The Conservative Party leadership election was decided in one ballot. The local Conservative Party membership in Chilliwack—Hope was behind Poilievre, with 68 per cent support on the first ballot.

Dr. Leslyn Lewis finished second in the Chilliwack-Hope riding with 654 votes, or 24.66 per cent. Roman Baber was a distant third, followed by Jean Charest and Scott Aitchison.

With over 678,000 members and almost 418,000 ballots cast, the Conservative Party is the largest party in Canadian history by membership, resulting in the highest voter turnout ever, according to Strahl’s office.
