YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Accelerating our economy by supporting young researchers

Sep 1, 2022 | 7:47 AM

British Columbia is home to some of the brightest, most creative and most innovative minds in the country, whether they are born and raised here in B.C. or travel here for world-class opportunities in education and training.

In the next decade, up to 80 percent of new jobs will require some post-secondary education or training, and that’s why investing in those educational programs is at the heart of our government’s StrongerBC Economic Plan. By making education and training affordable and accessible today, we’re building a workforce that is stronger and better prepared for whatever the future brings.

One of the ways we’re working towards this goal is by funding more research internships, which give students real-world job experience and helps them connect them with potential employers.

Last week, our provincial government announced an investment of $8.6 million dollars for Mitacs, a B.C. based non-profit that connects student researchers with innovative companies where they can actually apply their research on the job. This funding will support the hiring of over 1,700 interns over the 2022/2023 period.

These paid internships are available to students and post-doctoral researchers who are doing research in key areas like life sciences, clean technology, emergency management, and advanced timber. These are all industries that are growing incredibly quickly in B.C., thanks to our home-grown talent.

Here in the Valley, Mitacs currently supports two student interns at Atlas Power Technologies’ supercapacitator lab in Abbotsford, where they are working on sustainable projects for energy storage. Last week I had the chance to visit the facility with two of my colleagues and was truly impressed by the innovative work these students are undertaking.

Investing in internship opportunities for students not only helps the next generation to achieve their goals, it also allows our province to benefit from research that makes life better for all British Columbians.

Students and young people here in B.C. are passionate about creating a strong, inclusive, and sustainable economy. When we provide students with the tools and opportunities they need, the future looks bright.
