ABBOTSFORD — With one week left before classes resume for another school year, parents doing back-to-school shopping may be feeling the financial pinch with everything being more expensive due, in part, to inflation.

Local organizations such as the Salvation Army in Abbotsford are ramping up efforts with their ‘Back-to-School’ event taking place Thursday (Sept. 1).

According to the non-profit, a grant received from the Abbotsford Community Foundation—Smart & Caring Community Fund, helped to provide new school supplies and gift cards for 250 students.

Additionally, this week, the province also announced the Student and Family Affordability Fund, giving $60 million to help school districts ensure students are fed and have the school supplies they need in order to be successful.

“Many families in B.C. are feeling the effects of global inflation on daily costs, including groceries, school supplies, and other school expenses,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education and Child Care. “We’re taking action by providing more funding that school districts will use to help meet the needs of families and students.”

The one-time funding will be provided directly to school districts to help them expand school meal programs, make sure students have the school supplies they need, and cover any additional fees so that students in need can take part in activities, such as field trips.

The Salvation Army Abbotsford/Mission have partnered for a third year to provide families with food hampers and school supplies.
