Winter storm warning issued for Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt

VANCOUVER — A special weather statement has been upgraded to a winter storm warning for the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt.

Environment Canada states the stretch of Highway 5 will see heavy snow and strong, gusty winds throughout the day Monday (Nov. 4). It’s due to a strong Pacific frontal system that will push into B.C.’s interior Monday.

While lower elevations could see rain by the afternoon, the weather agency states snowfall accumulation is expected to be around 20 centimetres at the Coquihalla Summit.

“Additionally, strong and gusty southerly winds will begin this morning and switch to strong westerly winds tonight. The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds will result in severely reduced visibilities and blowing snow conditions,” Environment Canada states. “If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for taillights ahead and be prepared to stop. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.”

The weather agency adds the snow could create treacherous driving conditions.

A special weather statement calling for snowfall accumulations of five to 10 centimetres and gusty winds remains in effect for the Coquihalla Highway from Kamloops to Merritt, the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna and Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton.
