SURREY – An RCMP operation in which two dozen alleged shoplifters were arrested at a Surrey mall is spearheading a drive to keep retail spaces safe during the upcoming holiday shopping season.

Surrey RCMP say 17 charges for theft under $5,000, among other offenses, were recommended following a “Boost and Bust” operation at Guildford Town Centre on Monday.

Investigators report that approximately $6,500 in stolen goods were recovered, leading to the arrests and the issuance of warrants for three other individuals.

Additionally, three weapons, including knives and pepper spray, were seized.

In a statement, Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Nigel Pronger said the bust was part of a campaign that will see more officers monitoring local shopping centers amid the approaching holiday season.

“Police will have a robust presence in and around our shopping centers, with both uniformed and covert operations,” Pronger stated on Friday.

“Those who choose to commit crimes face a real risk of arrest and the subsequent legal consequences of their actions.”

The Guildford Town Centre initiative on Oct. 21 enlisted the RCMP’s Community Response Unit, a Delta Police support team, mall security, and nine retailers.
