MISSION — Mounties in Mission say a man who was sought in connection with a significant fire at Superstore in Mission Tuesday night has come forward to talk to police.

According to a Thursday morning (Oct. 24) update from police, Mission RCMP released an image of a man they wanted to identify and speak with in connection to the fire.

That man has now come forward and is cooperating with the investigation. The Mission RCMP have thanked the media and the public for their willingness to assist with this investigation.

“Police can now also update that the fire has been confirmed to be an arson,” Mission RCMP said. “Although it may seem obvious that a fire in a toilet paper aisle must have been intentionally set, investigators needed time to confirm there was no other possible source of ignition – such as from an electrical fault. The investigation is ongoing and police are continuing to review various sources of evidence.”

Anyone with more information who has not yet spoken with police is asked to contact Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161.

Police say Superstore was evacuated after a suspicious started inside the store Tuesday night at approximately 10:45 p.m. Police say smoke from the fire spread throughout the store and activated the sprinkler system. All customers and staff exited safely, though some sustained minor smoke inhalation. Initial evidence indicates the fire was intentionally set, but police say further investigation is needed to confirm this. Smoke and water damage is significant inside the store, which remains closed Wednesday morning.

Mission Fire Rescue Service said all three fire halls were paged. An estimated 30 firefighters were dispatched and arrived on scene.
