ABBOTSFORD — The civilian watchdog agency that probes police involvement in cases involving injury or death has cleared the Abbotsford PD of any wrongdoing following the arrest of a man last month.

According to a statement from the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C., AbbyPD officers were dispatched September 21 for the report of a man threatening people and damaging property in a residential building. When police arrived on scene, the man remained in the unit where he allegedly continued to damage property. Officers attempted to negotiate with him but were allegedly unsuccessful.

Police later observed smoke inside and used force to enter the dwelling. The man allegedly did not cooperate, leading to an interaction with officers where they used less-lethal force. The man was subsequently apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to a hospital for assessment.

The IIO was notified shortly after and commenced an investigation.
