YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Summer of local fun

Aug 18, 2022 | 6:00 AM

It has been a jam-packed summer full of community events here in Abbotsford and Mission, and I can’t tell you how heartwarming it is to be back connecting with people in person again over the last few months.

Since March 2020, when our lives were turned upside down due to a global pandemic, the yearly outdoor events that we might normally attend in the summer were put on hold as we all made personal sacrifices to keep our friends, family and neighbours safe.

After British Columbians kept their circles small and went out to get vaccinated across the province, we have finally been able to return to some of our favourite local events.

In June, I was so happy to be able to attend Mission’s Sip and Stroll Art Walk, the 50th Anniversary Exhibit at the Mission Museum, and get some local goods and veggies a few times from the Mission Farmers’ Market.

Abbotsford had just as much in store in the month of June with the West Coast Women’s Show at Abbotsford Tradex, the Agricultural Bus Tour organized by the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and the Nature’s Pickins BBQ Lunch.

The celebrations rolled into July (along with the heat) with Canada Day events, the Abbotsford Agrifair, the We Are One Drag and Comedy Show, Fraser Valley Pride, and one of my favourite weekends of the year—the Mission Folk Music Festival.

The three-day festival at Fraser River Heritage Park was back, bringing world-class music to the Fraser Valley this year, and I didn’t realize how much I had missed it until I was there enjoying it once again with family and friends, including my colleague Bob D’Eith, the MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission, who I’ve enjoyed seeing at many local events this summer.

While it has been incredible to watch, hear, or taste all these local events, the best part has been to connect with people in the community again and watch the joy that it brings people to be together.

I am so thankful to all of those who work and volunteer tirelessly to bring such wonderful events to our communities, especially after facing a few uncertain years. I am grateful to work for a New Democrat government that invests in the arts through annual grants and that helped boost some of these organizations and events through the pandemic to make sure we could return to them once more.

Summer isn’t over yet, and while we’re just halfway through August, this month has already been amazing. Highlights have included Bard in the Valley at Eco Dairy at Mountain View Farms in Abbotsford, Mission Fest; B.C. Historic Motor Races; and a long-time beloved event—the 60th anniversary Abbotsford Airshow.

Thank you to all who have shared a wave, a conversation, or a smile this summer, and I look forward to seeing you out at the farmers’ market or another community event, like the weekly Twilight Concert Series at Fraser River Heritage Park—I’ve already been to six.
