CHILLIWACK — Depending on the position, election workers could make anywhere from $340 to over $600 in this fall’s Chilliwack-area election.

The Fraser Valley Regional District announced on its website this week that it is looking for people to join its elections team ahead of municipal elections in October.

Available positions include presiding election official, alternate presiding election official, and election official.

Compensation to work at FVRD polling locations is $500 for the presiding election official, $400 for the alternate presiding election official, and $325 for an election official.

Municipal poll locations are generally open until 8 p.m. Election workers can expect to work anywhere from 14-16 hours, according to the FVRD website. Hours vary depending on driving times to each location.

Election staff are required to arrive at their assigned location by 7 a.m. to begin set-up. Voting locations close at 8 p.m., followed by clean-up duties and counting (October 15 only).

Election workers need to be 18 years of age, legally entitled to work in Canada, not a candidate or candidate representative or financial representative, and be available to work all day on either Wednesday, October 5 or Saturday, October 15, the latter of which is voting day.

All election workers must attend a paid, mandatory two-hour training session for which they are compensated $32. Election workers assigned to remote locations will be paid a location premium of $75.

All elections staff will be paid by direct deposit on Friday, October 21. Email elections@fvrd.ca, or call 604-702-5000 for more information. Application forms are available online at fvrd.ca.

The City of Chilliwack is also looking to hire election workers for the upcoming municipal election. The chief election officer hopes to hire 180 temporary staff to work on voting day (October 5) and advance voting day (October 5 and 12).
