Chilliwack Flight Fest will be flying high on Aug. 21

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Flight Fest is set to soar to new heights on Aug. 21 at the Chilliwack Airport.

Ray Firkus, director of the Chilliwack Flight Fest Society, said it has been three years since the last event, which was held in 2019.

“We’re coming off of not having an airshow and not doing anything socially as a society for years, and everybody’s a little rusty,” Firkus said, laughing. “And we got a lot of new players involved, and it’s almost like starting all over again.”

The flight event is free to the public, and there will also be a dance on Aug. 20.

“The Hangar Dance is a fundraiser—it’s something we’ve had a number of times, and it’s something we always want to have because it’s always been such a big hit,” he said.

The dance has a fee of $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Local Chilliwack band, The Vacationers, will be performing for the event.

“The airshow itself, we’re going to have a number of static displays, Kids Landing—which has always been a big hit, food trucks, the military, hopefully, are going to bring something,” Firkus added. “The Museum of Flight from Langley is coming out and putting on a static display as well.”

The director said there have been a lot of community sponsors that have assisted in the planning of the event.

“We’re excited to have an airshow back because it’s been a long time,” Firkus remarked. “What I’m anxious about is that we’re involved in a number of other shows and, so far, airshows this year have been sold out. Abbotsford was sold out; it seems very popular. What do I worry about? Having more success than we’re prepared for. We’re trying to prepare for the unknown, and it’s a little bit of a challenge—that’s my biggest fear at this point.”
