Electric scooter ignited fire sends two to hospital
CHILLIWACK — Two people were taken to Chilliwack General Hospital as a result of a fire in an apartment complex on the 45000 block of Trethewey Avenue Friday (May 31) evening. The fire was reported at approximately 9:45 p.m., prompting a response of 17 firefighters from Halls 1 and 4.
A news release from the Chilliwack Fire Department says firefighters arrived to find residents evacuating the smoke-filled first floor. The building’s sprinkler system had already activated, helping to control the fire. Firefighters assisted in the evacuation, provided medical care, and managed the removal of smoke and water from the premises.
Two individuals were transported to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Despite the water and smoke damage, officials confirmed that residents could returns to their homes.
The cause of the fire was determined to be an electric scooter that was charging.
