VICTORIA — The B.C. Conservative Party welcomed its third MLA to the party Friday (May 31) following the defection of Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Lorne Doerkson from BC United.

According to a news release from the party, Doerkson was first elected as MLA for Cariboo-Chilcotin in 2020. Doerkson, a long-time resident of the Cariboo-Chilcotin, has a diverse professional background. He spent 20 years in the newspaper industry, followed by roles in the automobile industry and financial services as a self-employed professional.

“A dedicated advocate for his community, Doerkson has been recognized twice with the Community Booster award by the Chamber of Commerce,” BC Conservatives wrote. “He has served on numerous boards and volunteered for various local causes.”

Doerkson’s involvement includes emceeing events and holding executive positions with organizations such as the Williams Lake Stampede, the Chamber of Commerce, the BC Community Newspaper Association, and the Hough Memorial Cancer Society.

There may be more defections from BC United to BC Conservatives after possible talks of an electoral candidate sharing agreement between the two political parties fell through and did not materialize.

In the latest Angus Reid polling, the BC NDP are leading all parties in the province with 42 per cent, followed by the BC Conservatives at 31 per cent. BC United is currently polling at 16 per cent, and the BC Greens are bringing up the rear at 13 per cent.
