MISSION — A Chilliwack man will need an alternate source of transportation after he was observed staggering toward a car at a gas station in Mission last week, before trying to drive away intoxicated with a 12-pack of vodka cans inside his car.

According to a news brief from the Mission RCMP detachment, Mounties say an officer was conducting proactive patrols around 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning, May 21 when he noticed a man stumbling toward a car at a gas station on Haig Street before entering the vehicle and driving away. The officer pulled over the car to check the man’s sobriety. The man complied with police instructions and pulled over, but didn’t manage to fully stop his car. As the officer was speaking to the man, the car slowly continued creeping forward, evidently still in drive. Eventually, the officer was able to get the man to put the car in park and turn it off.

Police say the 32-year-old male driver from Chilliwack showed multiple signs of being impaired by liquor, one of which was a 12-pack of vodka drinks on the passenger floorboards. Several empty cans of alcohol provided another clue about the driver’s condition. He failed a roadside screening device test, and received a 90-day driving prohibition. His Chrysler 300 was impounded for 30 days.
