CHILLIWACK — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says it is actively responding to a wildfire north of Spences Bridge Friday (May 24) evening. The fire, identified as the Drinkwater Rd wildfire, is burning approximately five kilometres north of the community, on the east side of the Thompson River.

In a social media post, the BCWS says the fire is estimated at 10 hectares. The wildfire is classified as out of control and is burning on a steep slope and exhibiting rank 3 and 4 fire behaviour. It says the condition and the rate of spread are presenting challenges for firefighters.

The BCWS is taking aggressive measures to contain the blaze. Three initial attack crews and a response officer are on the scene, supported by two helicopters, a birddog aircraft and at least one airtanker.

DriveBC has not issued any warnings in the area suggesting travel along Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon has not been affected.
