B.C. Search and Rescue: Remember safety through busy May long weekend
May 17, 2024 | 11:41 AM
VANCOUVER — The B.C. Search and Rescue Association is urging outdoor enthusiasts to “adopt a safety mindset” before embarking on adventures ahead of the May long weekend.
The association says its crews are typically very busy on long weekends and for this upcoming one, they want to keep the task numbers as low as possible.
Victoria Clarke, manager with Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue, says in 2023, Juan de Fuca Marine Trail had the third highest number of rescues of any trail in the province, and most of them were lower leg injuries.
Clarke says people should choose hiking boots with a good grip and proper ankle support if they’re planning a hiking trip this weekend.
