Update: Human-caused wildfire located northeast of Chilliwack is under control

CHILLIWACK — A small fire designated as being out of control has been located east of Chilliwack near Laidlaw, a small farming community southeast of Highway 1.

According to the latest BC Wildfire Service information, the 0.009-hectare sized wildfire named V10341 was discovered Thursday afternoon (May 16) at 2:46 p.m. north of Sowerby Creek.

Out of control refers to a wildfire that is spreading or it is anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter or control line.

BC Wildfire Service says the fire is human-caused, possibly related to a motorhome fire southeast of Highway 1 between Chilliwack and Hope.

At one point, Popkum Fire Department had been dispatched after 3:30 p.m. Thursday for apparent smoke emanating from Laidlaw Road and Kent Road southeast of Highway 1, but the fire was determined to be outside of Popkum’s jurisdiction. Coastal Fire Centre was notified of the fire after Popkum Fire was cancelled from the call.
