Feds tout nearly $3 million in funding that bolstered Chilliwack pump track, public works
CHILLIWACK — The federal government is touting an allocation of nearly $3 million, through its Canada Community-Building Fund, that helped establish a new pump track in Chilliwack and several other public amenities in 2021.
The City of Chilliwack benefited from $2.95 million in federal funding, of which the largest portion, $1.7 million, was utilized to repave and rehabilitate 13 kilometres of roadways throughout Chilliwack. Six kilometres of bike lanes and over three kilometres of pedestrian facilities and sidewalks were built.
An additional $350,000 in funding helped pave the way for the installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacon crosswalks at 22 locations in order to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety at those intersections.
“To encourage people to walk and bike to get to their destination, safety has to be top of mind,” said Dominic LeBlanc, minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “Our government is pleased to be enabling numerous improvements to Chilliwack’s active transportation and recreational infrastructure. It is how we will build vibrant cities, where residents have the opportunity to get active and enjoy the outdoors.”
