YOUR PERSPECTIVE: British Columbians need relief from soaring gas prices

Mar 20, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Over the last seven years, the cost of living in British Columbia has been skyrocketing under the NDP, pushing families to the brink. From housing to groceries, every expense has become a significant burden that weighs heavily on the minds of British Columbians every day. Despite the need for help, the current NDP government continues to implement harmful policies that only deepen the cost of living crisis.

A recurring concern I hear from constituents and people across the province is the consistently high cost of gas in B.C. This issue is particularly critical for commuters and families reliant on vehicles for daily transportation to work and school, and those who live in areas lacking accessible and available public transportation. The rising gas prices have become a significant strain for families, especially those who are struggling to put food on their tables.

Under the NDP’s watch, gas prices have spiralled out of control, leaving British Columbia with the highest gas prices in North America. While our neighbours in Calgary and Edmonton enjoy significantly cheaper prices, British Columbians are shouldering this financial load. The simple act of commuting has become an overwhelming financial ordeal for many.

Despite the glaring issue of affordability, the NDP is set to further exacerbate the situation with a 23 percent increase in the provincial carbon tax on April 1, 2024. This move will further burden already high gas prices, impacting everyday activities such as grocery shopping and commuting.

The decision by Alberta to suspend its provincial gas tax shines as a beacon of hope, demonstrating a tangible way to alleviate these pressures. As highlighted by University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe, this suspension brought substantial relief to Albertans, easing inflation and making the cost of living more manageable for nearly everyone in the province.

People need a break from the pain at the pumps. Under a Kevin Falcon-led BC United Government, we commit to making life more affordable by permanently eliminating the provincial fuel tax. This action would save drivers up to 15 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel, and we would also halt the NDP’s planned increases to the carbon tax. We recognize that British Columbians cannot bear the weight of additional tax hikes amidst our current cost of living crisis.

The time for action is now. Gas prices in British Columbia have reached unsustainable levels and are placing an undue burden on British Columbians. Through the elimination of the provincial fuel tax and the cessation of carbon tax hikes, BC United is committed to making meaningful steps toward this cost of living crisis and helping make gas more affordable in the province.

United, we can fix David Eby’s affordability crisis.
