G.W. Graham varsity boys rugby secures huge win over Abby Secondary in 2024 season opener
CHILLIWACK — The G.W. Graham varsity boys rugby team got its 2024 season off to an auspicious start in their season opener, beating Abbotsford Secondary 58 to 22 last week in a match that was highly anticipated after last year’s playoff defeat.
According to G.W. rugby coach Michael Jordan, the 2024 squad features a blend of seasoned veterans, enthusiastic juniors, and newcomers. They showcased their growth and determination under the exemplary leadership of vice-captains Reid O’Brien and Carson Noske.
The game began with an electrifying try by winger Noah Johnson, who continued to dominate the field by scoring a total of four tries and earning the Player of the Game title. The centres, Yapo Conteh and Riley Ashley, demonstrated remarkable skill and agility, overwhelming the opposition and contributing significantly to the team’s offensive strength. In the face of a larger and formidable Abbotsford Secondary pack, GW Graham’s forwards showed superior discipline and power in the set pieces.
Despite facing a determined push from Abbotsford Secondary in the second half and having two players sent to the sin bin, G.W. Graham’s defense remained unbreakable. Flankers Alex Fourie and Grady Andrea played a crucial role in maintaining pressure on Abbotsford, disrupting their game play and momentum.
