Birthday scam targets Mission residents with big hearts

MISSION — Residents of Mission are being urged to exercise caution following reports of a potential donation scam targeting compassionate individuals in the community.

Over the past week, Mission RCMP have received two complaints from individuals who believe they had fallen victim to fraudulent schemes. RCMP say both complainants were solicited on a Facebook group post by someone claiming to be a single parent. They were seeking money to pay for their young child’s birthday celebration.

The donors agreed to help out but later discovered similar pleas for assistance across multiple online accounts, each with slight variations in the names but linked to the same contact number.

Corporal Harrison Mohr of the Mission RCMP emphasized the importance of vigilance in such situations. “It’s great to see this sense of community and these acts of selfless charity, but be aware that there are some people whom will look to take advantage of a kind heart,” said Cpl. Mohr.
