But that all changed when SFU abruptly cancelled its football program in April 2023. Feaver, however, will get a second chance. He announced over the weekend that he has committed to play at the University of Alberta this fall.

CHILLIWACK — Former G.W. Graham quarterback Lucas Feaver from the class of 2023 had a bright, promising future ahead of him when he received an athletic scholarship to play football at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby.

Feaver, who racked up 2,458 passing yards and 28 passing TDs during a memorable 2022 season in which the Grizzlies won 11 games en route to the provincial championship game, had even been accepted into the Beedie School of Business at SFU.

But that all changed when the university announced in April 2023 that it had axed its football program, leaving players like Feaver, who had already committed exclusively to the school, without many options that late in the recruiting game, so to speak.

Feaver, though, will get a second chance to prove himself at the next level. Feaver announced over the weekend that he has committed to play football at the University of Alberta.

“The GW Graham Grizzlies are super excited to announce that Grizzlies alumni, Lucas Feaver, has signed with the University of Alberta, where he will proudly represent the Grizzlies on the Football Team,” G.W. Graham wrote on its Instagram page Sunday night. “Your Grizzly family is extremely proud of all your hard work and dedication. We know you are going to represent GW Graham with pride, spirit, and passion!”

G.W. Graham varsity head coach Ryk Piché said the program is thrilled to see Feaver play at the next level.

“Lucas was a remarkable leader and tenacious competitor,” Coach Piché said. “We are super excited to see Lucas move on to the university level.”

Feaver, a 5-foot-9, 175-pounder who registered a 3.25 grade point average and ran a 4.89 speed in the 40-yard dash, also tacked on 274 rushing yards and five rushing TDs during his senior year, a season that saw him record a 73.3 per cent completion percentage and a 13.9 per cent TD completion mark.

In the run-up leading to SFU’s decision to abolish its football program, Feaver had previously narrowed his postsecondary destinations to UBC, Arizona Christian, and SFU, before deciding on the SFU Red Leafs, the only Canadian university that competes in the NCAA.

Feaver’s teammate Tyson Orregaard, a wide receiver who received a full-ride scholarship and committed to play at the University of Manitoba, touted Feaver’s skill set on X/Twitter in April 2023 following the SFU debacle.

“Lucas Feaver is the best quarterback I’ve got to see play,” Orregaard said on April 4, 2023 on Twitter. “After SFU shut down its program…he’s got no team to play for next year. If you’re a coach needing [a] difference maker at quarterback, reach out to him. Hardest working dude I’ve seen.”
