CHILLIWACK — The provincial election is still another seven months away, but that’s not stopping two MLA hopefuls from Chilliwack from getting out and talking to local constituents.

Fresh off their campaign announcements this week that they will run as MLA candidates in two Chilliwack ridings, Heather Maahs and Á’a:líya (A’aliya) Warbus were joined by Conservative Party of B.C. leader John Rustad at this weekend’s Fraser Valley Women’s Expo at Heritage Park in Chilliwack.

Maahs will challenge Dan Coulter, Minister of State for Transit and Infrastructure, in the newly named Chilliwack North riding. Coulter was first elected in October 2020 with 41.56 per cent of the vote, beating former MLA John Martin by over 12 points.

B.C. United and the B.C. Greens have yet to nominate a candidate in this riding.

Meanwhile, Warbus will be competing in the newly named Chilliwack-Cultus Lake riding alongside fellow challenger Sue Knott of B.C. United. The B.C. Green Party has not named a candidate for this riding. The incumbent is MLA Kelli Paddon, who was first elected in 2020 with 36.42 per cent of the vote, defeating former MLA Laurie Throness by just under six percentage points.

Speaking of Paddon, she has a free pancake breakfast planned for Saturday, March 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Carman United Church, 7258 Vedder Road.

The event is designed to bring supporters together as the B.C. NDP gear up for the next election and work towards getting Kelli re-elected.

“Hot cakes, flapjacks, pancakes!” an event description reads on Facebook. “Join MLA Kelli Paddon for a free pancake breakfast. Meet new friends and other supporters in Chilliwack-Cultus Lake as we gear up for the next election and work towards getting Kelli Paddon re-elected.”
