Funding concerns

Questions loom for proposed Surrey bio-fuel plant

SURREY — A Conservative M.P. says a proposed biofuel plant in South Surrey on First Nations land is no longer receiving federal financial support from Natural Resources Canada.

Kerry-Lynn Findlay, M.P. in the riding of South Surrey-White Rock, says the project proposed on Semiahmoo First Nation land has raised concerns from nearby residents.

Findlay says Natural Resources Canada is no longer financially supporting the project, but the company behind the biofuel facility can still apply for funding in the future.

Last month, Natural Resources Canada said it no longer had federal authority over the project, which proposes to take organic waste collected in Metro Vancouver to produce natural gas and fertilizer.
