CHILLIWACK — Rugby Canada is partnering with RCMP Indigenous Policing Services to conduct an Indigenous Rugby Camp next month in Chilliwack.

The initiative is meant to showcase talent and promote leadership among Indigenous youth. The camp will be held on Friday, March 29 during spring break at G.W. Graham Secondary School in Chilliwack. The Thunder Rugby Camp & Celebration event runs from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by dinner and speakers at 6 p.m. at Tzeachten Hall at 6 p.m.

According to a news release from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, this event seeks to celebrate Indigenous culture while providing a local platform for skill development, mentorship, and community building embedded in the sport of rugby.

Through on-field training sessions, the camp hopes to meet the following objectives:

Athletic development: Participants will receive coaching and training to improve their rugby skills and tactical understanding of the game.

Leadership empowerment: Indigenous youth will have the opportunity to develop leadership qualities through team-building exercises led by Indigenous role models.

Cultural celebration: The camp will celebrate Indigenous culture by promoting a sense of pride and identity among participants.

Community engagement: By promoting connections between participants, coaches, and community leaders including members of the RCMP Indigenous Policing Service, the camp seeks to strengthen bonds within the Indigenous rugby community and promote long-term engagement in the sport.

The camp will be followed by a cultural celebration with special guest speakers.
