Theft of copper lines leads to closure of libraries north of Hope

CHILLIWACK — The theft of copper lines has temporarily closed two libraries in the Fraser Canyon for the rest of this week.

According to a social media alert posted Tuesday afternoon, the Fraser Valley Regional Library has confirmed that the Boston Bar and Yale libraries will be shuttered from Tuesday, February 20 through Friday, February 23 due to the theft of copper lines, which has caused telephone and internet outages in the area.

Earlier in the day Tuesday, Telus said there was no landline and cell service in small Fraser Canyon communities north of Hope.

According to a Facebook post on the Fraser Valley Regional District, Telus has advised E-Comm that landline and cell service is currently unavailable in Boston Bar, Yale and Spuzzum. The three communities combined have over 700 residents.

In case of a life-threatening emergency, authorities suggest calling 9-1-1 in case phone service has been restored. If there’s still no service, residents are asked to ask a friend for help and head to the nearest emergency room or doctor, or police/fire department if able.

Earlier in the day, Telus notified FVRD personnel of a 9-1-1 service disruption for the Fraser Canyon (including Boston Bar, North Bend, and Canyon Alpine).

Residents there were asked to either go directly to the Boston Bar RCMP detachment at 47864 Old Boston Bar Road beside the Canada Post office, calling them at 604-867-9333, or in the event of a medical emergency, proceed directly to the Boston Bar Ambulance detachment.

Impacted Telus customers in parts of the Fraser Canyon have been experiencing outages related to accessing 9-1-1, wireless voice, home/commercial internet, TV, and wireless services.
