IIO finds no police misconduct in connection with Chilliwack man’s injuries connected to tractor rollover along Highway 1
CHILLIWACK — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has completed its investigation into an incident involving a farm tractor along Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley that resulted in serious harm to the driver. The incident began in the Chilliwack area and ended on Highway 17 near the 176th Street exit in Surrey on November 25, 2023..
At approximately 1:20 p.m., members of the BC Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop on a westbound farm tractor. The situation escalated, leading to a collision between the police vehicles and the tractor on Hwy 17. The tractor overturned, ejecting the male driver from Chilliwack, who suffered severe injuries and was promptly transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
In a news release Friday (Feb. 9), the Chief Civilian Director states IIO examined evidence, including statements from civilian witnesses, forensic scene analysis, video footage, medical records, and police information. Following the review, it was determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer involved may have committed an offence.
Despite the conclusion of the IIO investigation, the public report will not be released on the IIO website until the conclusion of concurrent court proceedings related to the incident. This decision is meant to preserve the integrity of both the investigative process and any potential legal proceedings.
