Abbotsford Police officer acquitted of assault charge
ABBOTSFORD β An officer with the Abbotsford Police Department has been acquitted of an assault charge dating back to an incident in February of 2020. Cst. Shawn Nagel was a police dog service handler involved in the arrest of Dustin Mills.
Nagel was one of several officers required to arrest Mills at the time of the incident.
The role of Nagel and his police dog were the subject of an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office of BC. In June 2022 at the conclusion of the investigation, a charge of assault against Nagel was approved by Crown Counsel.
The case went to trial in September 2023 and ended in January 2024 when Crown Counsel submitted an acquittal request to the court.
