Phone scams continue to plague Abbotsford residents

ABBOTSFORD — Police in Abbotsford are urging the public to be aware of scam artists working in the region. According to a recent AbbyPD social media post, officers have been receiving complaints from the public about individuals claiming to be calling from the Abbotsford Police Department demanding money.

Generally, the callers will say a family member is in jail and money is needed immediately to cover legal fees. AbbyPD says a call like that is completely out of line with police procedures. Anyone receiving a similar type of call, should avoid engaging in the phone conversation.

The calls are similar to a popular grandparent fraud scheme. Individuals reach out to senior citizens and claim to be a family member who has run into legal trouble. They beg for money to help them pay their legal bills.

RCMP in B.C. have developed a number of tips to help prevent residents from becoming a victim of a phone scam.

Residents should be automatically suspicious of anyone asking for money over the phone and be extra suspicious if the money is requested to be delivered through a wire transfer which is difficult to track and almost impossible to recover.

Residents should always verify identities with other family members – ask for the caller’s name and never offer up other family member names. Verify identities or whereabouts of the caller with other family members, especially when they say something like, “you can’t tell mom and dad”.

Authorities say you should never feel pressured to send money immediately to anyone. And you should never disclose personal financial information.

Once you have hung up, call your local police department and pass along all relevant information.

Anyone who believes they may have been victimized can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 (888) 495-8501.
