CHILLIWACK — The Fraser Valley finds itself as one of the areas of concern as a series of rainstorms is set to batter the South Coast.

According to Environment Canada, residents of Chilliwack, Abbotsford and other parts of the Fraser Valley can expect to receive up to 120 millimetres of rain during a five-day atmospheric river event that will arrive Saturday (Jan. 27).

While not the highest predicted rainfall in the province, the Fraser Valley’s strategic location makes it a vital area of focus for preparedness efforts.

Environment Canada is predicting as much as 300 mm of rain on West Vancouver Island and in the Coastal Mountains, up to 250 mm in the Howe Sound area, up to 150 mm in Inland Vancouver Island and as much as 120 mm in the Sea to Sky and North and Central Coast areas. Up to 60 mm of precipitation is expected in the Southern Gulf Islands, the Fraser Canyon and the Coquihalla regions.

The combination of heavy rainfall and snowmelt from the nearby mountains could lead to increased pressure on the region’s river systems, potentially resulting in flooding. Additionally, saturated soils, coupled with strong winds, may pose a threat to trees and power lines.

In a provincial government news release, the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness says it will be closely monitoring conditions and collaborating with communities on preparedness activities. The Province says it is ready to deploy emergency measures, including up to four million sandbags, gabion and tiger dams, and other flood-related strategies, should the need arise.

Image: B.C. River Forecast Centre – Yellow areas are under a High Streamflow Advisory: River levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Orange areas are under a Flood Watch: River levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.

Current Flood Watches are in place for the South Coast, Fraser Valley – North, and Vancouver Island, while High Streamflow Advisories are issued for Lower Fraser River tributaries and other regions.

Provincial authorities are urging residents to take personal precautions, develop household plans, assemble emergency kits, and be aware of local government emergency response plans. Avoiding river shorelines, steering clear of floodwaters, and recognizing danger signs are crucial steps in staying safe.
