CHILLIWACK — A male has died after being struck by a vehicle on Yale Road near Prest Road in Chilliwack last Thursday, January 18.

According to a news release from RCMP Cpl. Carmen Kiener, Chilliwack RCMP responded to a report of an unresponsive male laying on the side of Yale Road near Prest Road in Chilliwack on Thursday, January 18 at 5:52 p.m. Police attended with BC Emergency Health Services and located the male who was pronounced deceased on scene. The injuries suffered were consistent with having been struck by a vehicle.

Cpl. Carmen Kiener says the Chilliwack Traffic Section assumed conduct of the investigation with help from frontline officers and support from the Chilliwack RCMP Serious Crime Unit. The vehicle was located less than 24-hours later by two observant frontline police officers and seized as evidence. The vehicle remains in police custody for further forensic analysis.

“Chilliwack RCMP Traffic Services continues to pursue all investigative avenues in relation to this incident with ongoing support from the Lower Mainland District Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services (ICARS) as well as the BC Coroners Service,” says Cpl. Michael Sabulsky. “This is a very dynamic investigation that has been rapidly forwarded by the quick response and incisive observations of frontline officers.”

Cpl. Sabulsky says that out of respect for the family, the name of the male victim will not be released to the public at this time. The description of the suspect vehicle will also not be released so as to maintain the continued integrity of what police are calling a “highly sensitive investigation.”

According to a statement from B.C. Emergency Health Services public information officer Jasprit Khandal, one B.C. Ambulance unit and an advanced care paramedic responder unit were dispatched and responded to the area in which an individual was hit. Paramedics did not transport any patients to hospital, Khandal said.

Scanner traffic from that evening indicated that BC EHS crews were on scene on Yale Road when they asked that RCMP respond to the scene urgently as the pedestrian was deceased.

There were snowy, wet conditions along Yale Road that night as Chilliwack received over a foot of snow the day before, though it’s not known exactly what preceded the fatality.

Police are seeking information in relation to this incident from the public. They’re asked to call the RCMP at 604-702-4611, or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
